After watching an Amazing Hotels episode, I fell in love with The Brando. The work they do to connect themselves to their environment (both physical and cultural) is really impressive. I appreciated how your piece really detailed that work (and also enjoyed the behind the scenes in your newsletter)! Thanks for giving me something to look forward to on this snowy Michigan day.
Nice writing, Jeff. Prior to entering Union Theological Seminary in NYC, getting ordained in 1997 and pastoring ever since ~ I was a Maitre d' in Manhattan for several years (on the opening team at the Ritz Carlton, etc.) ~ and food remains a fondness. Your writings, musings, and temperament (from what I can cull, having never met in person) makes me think of Francis Lam on the Splendid Table (NPR). I assume you know of him, but thought I would post this just in case my assumption is incorrect. I am new to and thoroughly enjoying your posts. ~ Dwight Lee Wolter
Hi Jeff, thank you for this wonderful and insightful post. Your observations about life and family helped me to realize that I am not alone in feeling that the people who share my Asian cultural heritage would consider me to be a failure in ways of the culture. Fortunately, the voice of the spirit has been a lot louder in my head lately and a lot encouraging. I took a lot of encouragement on the things you learned at the Brando resort, that's one small step for man and a whole lot of hope for our planet! Wishing you and Tristan and Fozzie joy and hope this New Year!
Happy New Year! My husband and I regularly read your blog together. He is Japanese American and enjoys your cultural perspectives that he shares in many ways. I can't wait to read your T&L article. Thank you also for sharing David Brooks's link. I find him one of the few conservatives that I can learn from (I know that's narrow but I just can't...) I sent the link out far and wide.
May we enter the Year of the Tiger with courage, hope, and rigor!
Thank you again Jeff for expanding my thinking. When you write about the year of the Tiger, I loved how you drew us into the Chinese traditions with new insights. "Instead of harbingers of what will inevitably come, I view the twelve as avatars of what could be.". What a gift you have to reinvent meaning into something that became so accessible to me. Thank you.
And I love your bike riding in Tahiti. Is that your beautiful Ginkgo shirt? To hear how that luxury hotel is reimagine luxury too is so encouraging. Thanks for giving me a little your of a place I'll probably never go but it felt nice to be there this morning. We need good writers like you. So, please keep writing for us. You always encourage me.

Happy New Year, Jeff. It is good to see you on Harley again!
Your words always plant seeds that make me more curious, nudge me to pause, and challenge my "know it all-ness". Grateful, Jess
Lovely, and such a gift to read, as always. Happy New Year, Jeff. 🐅
What a beautiful experience! Thanks for sharing.
