Arizmendi in Oakland's Lakeshore neighborhood is a simple, worker-owned bakery crafting thin-crust pizza plus cookies, scones, breads & more. Very rustic, always busy, always fresh

Jeff as a practicum leader for the Seattle school

Of Theology and Psychology I would have my students share a musical piece that spoke of their experience in practicum as we ended. My contribution was always The Story. It speaks so well of relationship It stays in my heart. I’m so glad you also like it

I have to admit that I thought of you several times this week when the national news shared the big cow on the Grand Rapids highway, attempting to merge.

Beautiful message on grief. All kinds of grief. I watched, instead of read it. Thank you for your vulnerability. Grief without it is something other than grief. And thank you for including Eva Cassidy. I no listened to her tonight singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” That ding was played at the funeral of my six year old daughter. I am no stranger to sorrow and grief. Grief is a sign of love. I am also the author of the newly released, “The Gospel of Loneliness” (The Pilgrim Press UCC). Nod or wink and I will send you a copy. Thanks again , Jeff, for the beauty of your grief and gladness. -Dwight Lee Wolter.

Thank you, Jeff. Grief is a weird thing. I like the metaphor of grief as a ball in a glass, getting smaller over time but still hitting the sides and making itself known at random times. Sending love to you all this season.

I so related to this meditation on grief. This time of year they are deeply felt. It takes practice to focus on the joys. Thanks Jeff!

Thank you for sharing the video link. It was so impactful to see and hear you, not just read your words. Sorrow and joy… what a mixed bag this season. Thank you for pointing us to a different way of remembering.

Have you tried La Farm Bakery? It’s fantastic. However, if you wander east a bit to Greenville, my daughter just opened Cornflower Bakehouse after winning NC 2023 Pastry Chef of the year. It’s pretty darn amazing, as is she.

We've tried La Farm Bakery, after hearing such good things about it from quite a few people, and it was... okay? I don't think I'll have time to make it all the way out to Greenville this trip, but I am taking note for the future. Thank you!

Jeff, I’ve never commented on one of your letters before, but they have been such a source of nourishment to me for about a full year now. The parts of me that feel unhealed and tender to the touch always perk up their ears for whatever you have to say. Thank you for honoring the fullness of what it means to be human with such gentle tenacity.

If you’re ever in Nashville, try out Dozen Bakery. They bake the only kouign amann that I’ve ever had, and it’s absolutely divine.

Truly grateful for these kind words. As a songwriter, you'll probably know the feeling: Often you do your thing, having no idea how—or whether—it affects the lives of those who receive your work. It really matters when someone tells you that it does.

Totally agree with you on the alternate interpretation of "The Story" -- the song has always nudged me toward an expansive view of people who come alongside us in life and truly know us, even as it is heartbreakingly intimate. And I don't know how on earth I missed Dolly's version, but thank you for linking that as well. I must have needed to shed the tears it provoked.

Have you read Brandi's memoir Broken Horses? It recently passed through my reading stack and I was not sorry for lingering on it.

Jeff, I love the way you write about how we " struggle to welcome the entire range of human emotion, even at the best of times" and how our culture doesn't do complexity very well. ... "But a facade of happiness doesn’t mean there isn’t sorrow within."This sentence of yours hit me hard as an extrovert optimist who sometimes "struggles with " Blue Christmas. Over the last several years my friends and I use the ampersand often...its always AND.. WE can be both. There is so much pain and war and heartache in this world &&& so many things like rich pastries to enjoy and babies to hug.

My favorite little place near me in the Northeast Kingdom, VT is right over the border in a little village in Quebec called Masonville. The place has an array fancy pastries and I always zoom in on the raspberry and custard. Oh, so flakey! And the yule logs are so beautiful this time of year.
