Danke for sharing your visit to Saarbrücken with us! Next time I go to Germany to visit family, I will have to include a day trip to Saarbrücken! This weekend I’ll be going to Niagara Falls (the Canadian side - I live near Hamilton, Ontario) with a family member visiting from Germany! Tschüss (2 x s at the end!) und Gottes Segen (and God’s blessings)
Thank you for the video on Meistermann! I've been so weighed down by fears of our own national doom that seeing his survival (refusal to bend to the Nazis) and use of light and color was a refreshing blast of holy design. I must read less analysis and experience more art....
Thank you for this beauty! I’ll be in upstate NY with grandchildren and family, in Nova Scotia for a September road trip.
Please pray for our congregation and sr pastor, Anna. She has announced her retirement at the end of the year and we’ve been through a lot of change in pastoral staff the last five years. Thank you.
My grandpa was born and raised in Saarbrücken. He immigrated to the US during the war, but went back to his home when he retired. Its history of being swapped between nations over and over again and the trauma of that is terrible, and yet it’s such a beautiful place with surprising places (like the stained glass) where beauty fills in the trauma. I love that place and am so happy to hear you write about it.
Thank you for sharing some of your travels. The beautiful stained glass is breathtaking. I can only imagine it in person!
You put words to what I was feeling over the past few days as I spent a long weekend with a friend in Bodega Bay, CA.
“One of the reasons I travel is to be transported outside of my ordinary experience—to see and hear and taste and feel something new, to be moved, maybe even to be surprised.”
I’ve lived in California most of my life and have never experienced Bodega Bay and Petaluma. Seeing it through my friend’s eyes who grew up there, and meeting her friends who make cheese from the milk they get from the cows they raise and care for was such a different view of California for me. It gave me a new perspective.
I’m fortunate to be going to Missoula, Dallas, Capitola and Paso Robles this Summer, and then taking a 2 week trip to Italy in the Fall. Gosh I love to travel!
Oh this is lovely, thank you, Jeff! I can’t resist stained-glass windows either, and these are gorgeous. Waving hello from Berlin and wishing you a safe journey home :)
Your postcard from Germany was an unexpected delight for us readers! I'm absolutely smitten with those modern stain glass windows now, and Meistermann's art. Reminds me of modern quilts (which I admire but do not make). Your gift of sharing this unexpected beauty made me smile and compell to me make a little comment - it mattered - bringing grace to all of us readers, where ever we find ourselves. My upcoming trip will be to Winnipeg to visit with my best girl friends from University for 20 years!
The joy you experienced from these stunning windows was spread through your writing--thank you! I am so pleased to learn about Prof. Georg Meistermann.
Jerry and I are heading soon for a simple resort near Alexandria, MN where we bike, fish, run, and grill--pretty much live outside and are renewed by nature.
Ja, ja, ja, wonderful glass. Remarkable and daring that your favourite window should have brown! Notice that in all the examples, the glass is purely mosaic, each piece being a discrete colour, harking back to medieval glass, the only adjustment being the shading within the colour. Allowing light and glass to do their own work, instead of trying to imitate backlit paintings.

Thank you for this beautiful post! It made my day and reminded me of beauty and grace, 2 things which I desperately need in my life at the moment.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful and magnificent discovery.
Thanks for teaching me about an artist I hadn't heard of. There is so much beauty out there, if we know where to look.
I will be driving from my home in Dallas to visit a friend in Mears, Michigan in June.
Beautiful post!
We will be going to Palouse Falls, Winthrop, Cle Elum here in Washington and then Yellowstone and Grand Tetons. We’re celebrating our 50th!
Welcome to Germany! I hope you continue to enjoy your time here!
