Some fragmented thoughts on war memorials, forgiveness, remembrance, and the enduring pattern of common folk who pay the price for the choices of the powerful
Fascinating article Jeff, thanks for writing this. Maybe sometimes people have short memories for these things if it isn't planted in the own backyard. I look forward to next week's visit with the whales. I do love whales. Splendid creatures they are.
This is such beautiful, subtle reporting and metaphor for the times. Everything changes, and nothing changes. Thank you for the blessing of your reflection!
Thanks for your comments and thoughts on the war memorials. I've been to them twice and they really take one's breath away as the horrors of war are laid totally bare.
Oh my Jeff! I loved reading about your experience there in Okinawa. We were stationed there about 41 years ago as newlyweds and all the memorials and stories have stayed with us all that time. We had never seen a culture that reveres their ancestors like that and tells the stories of all the loss. War is a confusing time and now with the US bombs over Iran all I can hope for is peace. Such needless dying of so many young and old people.
“We went on the battlefield without knowing the truth,” the English words on one wall read. “War kills everything.” These words stopped me in my tracks! How true this is, so thankful for you Jeff.
Beautifully written as always and apropos in light the last few days current even ts. Thank ypu for always finding beauty amidst the tragic and devastation.
Love reading your work and about this amazing trip. So hard to take in the losses in Okinawa. Thank you for sharing.
I’m so thankful for you.
