I love all potatoes (Kettle jalapeno chips...yum!). I'm still crying over my dog. I pray the psalms always and often turn to the blessings of Jan Richardson and John O'Donohue. And that extraordinary book A Little Life left a sadness in my heart that still has a "life" of its own. Thank you for the gift of this post!
Jeff I am so excited that you will be coming to New Zealand again in February. Is it for a holiday or work? If you are in Wellington, where I live, my husband and I would love to take you out for dinner and show you some of the sights (best big little city ever!)
Your answer to the question on hope for the future was/is the sermon I need. Thank you for that and for your honesty and generosity throughout this nl.
You give me hope! As does the promise of cooler weather, the growth of an avocado tree I planted, and clean hair. Also medicine! Hope shows up in the big and little things. Thank you for reminding me to look for it
As to preaching: Ian Pitt-Watson, Fuller Seminary, mid1980’s:
“If you are not nervous when u stand to preach, sit down. The Holy Spirit has left you.”
For 35’years, my gut would start knotting up on Saturday night (no more parties:). It stayed that way until I stepped into the pulpit on Sunday. Then, I pray, the HS took over my stumbling words and made soul coherence!
My husband just announced that “Jeff Chu’s fish” is for dinner. It’s become a favorite in our house. I’m not sure what you called it but it’s steamed with lots of soy sauce. Anyway you are famous in our house 😄
~Hopelessness is for the privileged. -Dr. Cleveland. I will be thinking about that.
What’s saving me right now is hugs and kind words from friends and family as we navigate loss, overwhelm, and loving each other well. I am not usually a hugger, but when I hugged my sister-in-law yesterday, I wept. Overwhelm, tension I didn’t realize had become a constant, frustration melted out of my eyes and heart. We have different personalities but she still sees me and loves my kids and I well. I was relieved. 🥰
"I also try to remind myself that I am a person of faith" might be my favourite sentence ever written.
When it comes to the occasional challenges of travel, it's really true! Thanks so much for reading.

Was just in Stellenbosch - loved it so much. Go to the Fat Butcher for a meal if you can but so many good options to try. Praying for safe travels.
Yes to all of this but especially the answer about hope and despair.

So glad for your voice!
