Thank you for focusing on Robert Alter. I have been a fan for years. My favorite from his translation of the Psalms is 46:10: Let go, and know that I am God. So much more comforting than "be still".

Alter’s words and his work in general are so interesting. The Bible is not nearly a sanitized as many purport it to be. I definitely want to check out Alter’s version. I’ve been bouncing between the NIV and ESV for a long time now.

Am I the only person who finds "Alter" to be a punny author's name for translating the OT? And I have ordered "Strong as Death is Love"... the Song of Songs, Esther, Ruth, Jonah and Daniel!

My synagogue's Torah study group spent 30 years on Torah (the first five books) and now we are circling back to Genesis again. I am using the Alter translation and am loving it. We started on Genesis in Sept and will beging chaper 3 of Genesis on Sunday--so we continue our long, deep, bracing dive into the text! So glad you have set out this engaging article on the Alter translation
